R3 Round-Up: Robins At The World Cup

The Rugby League World Cup saw five Robins in action this weekend.

Round Three of the Rugby League World Cup got underway with England's 34-12 victory over Papua New Guinea on Friday Morning, with Rhyse Martin starting for Papua New Guinea and also Jez Litten starting for England, with Mikey Lewis on the bench.

It was Matty Ashton from Warrington who opened the scoring for England and was shortly followed by AJ Brimson, Dom Young and Harry Smith in the first half. Papua New Guinea scored shortly before the end of the first half with Dudley Dotio getting them on the board.

Mikey Lewis made an appearance in the 58th minute of the game, and immediately made himself known with strong attacking and defensive sets.

Lewis managed to get the final score of the game on the hooter for England, flying into the corner for a try.

England’s victory wasn’t enough to see them through to the semi-final.

Despite the defeat for Papua New Guinea, it was Rhyse Martin’s final professional Rugby League game before he retires from the game.

On Sunday at 6:40am BST, it was Arthur Mourgue and Jordan Dezaria who were in action for Lebanon versus France in Sydney. Mourgue started on the field whilst Dezaria was on the bench for the beginning of the game.

The first blood of the game went to Lebanon with France finally getting on the board by the end of the first half with a penalty try.

In the 77th minute, there were two yellow cards for fighting, Alex Twal for Lebanon and Julian Bousquet for France which took both teams to twelve players a piece.

After a goal line drop out from Lebanon, Arthur Mourgue managed a two-point drop goal from behind the 40 metre line to level the score and take the scores level with ten seconds left.

There was drama in extra time as César Rougé slotted over a drop goal for France but was later chalked off for obstruction. Lebanon got a penalty just inside the French half of the field for a big hit and went for the two, but missed between the sticks. Arthur Mourgue managed to catch the ball and attempted to kick it forward but was swept up by Abas Miski who scored a try for Lebanon to win the game 24 - 20 in Golden Point.
