Phil Lowe Way: Hull KR Honour Club Legend with Street Renaming
Hull KR are proud to confirm the renaming of Poorhouse Lane to Phil Lowe Way in honour of one of the club’s greatest ever players, Phil Lowe.
The East Hull street leading to Sewell Group Craven Park will now permanently bear the name of the iconic second-rower, following a successful request to Hull City Council. The renaming pays tribute to Lowe’s remarkable contribution to Hull KR and the wider game of Rugby League.
The official unveiling of Phil Lowe Way was attended by Phil’s family, closest friends, Hull KR officials and first team staff, and members of the media as the club marks the extraordinary legacy left by a true sporting giant of the city.
Phil Lowe enjoyed a glittering career with Hull KR, scoring 179 tries in 418 appearances in-between securing the NSWRL premiership with Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in 1976.
Regarded as the finest running second row forward the game of Rugby League has seen, Lowe helped guide the Robins to Challenge Cup, Championship, and Premiership titles during the club’s golden era in the 1970s and early 80s.
On the international stage, Lowe also made history, representing Great Britain with distinction, playing a key role in their 1972 Rugby League World Cup triumph.
Hull KR Owner, Neil Hudgell, said: “Phil Lowe was more than just a great player – he was a gentleman of the game and a legend of the club. His impact on Hull KR, the city, and the sport of rugby league is immeasurable.
Renaming the road to our stadium as Phil Lowe Way is not only a lasting tribute to his incredible legacy, but also a way for future generations to remember and be inspired by one of the finest to ever wear the Red and White.”
Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Hull City Council, said: “It was a pleasure to work with Hull KR for the renaming of Phil Lowe Way.
This city has a proud history of recognising its sporting heroes through the renaming of street names and the council was delighted to be able to do so once again, remembering one of Hull KR’s greatest ever players.”
