Minchella announced as Hull KR Captain
Hull KR are delighted to announce Elliot Minchella has been selected as the Robins’ Captain for the 2024 Betfred Super League season.
Known for his physical, direct style with the ball in hand and in defence, Elliot has grown to become a key member of the club's spine. A fierce, hardworking competitor on and off the field, Minchella takes the reins from the now retired, Shaun Kenny-Dowall.
The loose forward was previously the Robins’ Vice-Captain in 2021 and 2022 before playing a key part in the club’s senior leadership group this year. Now the 27-year-old will front up Hull KR’s Leadership Group alongside Ryan Hall and James Batchelor with the potential of more players joining the group in 2024.
Since making his debut for the Robins in Round One of the 2020 Super League against Wakefield, Minchella has progressed to become one of the Red and White’s standout leaders on and off the field.
Minchella had a breakout season for the Red and Whites in 2020, receiving the Players’ Player of the Year Award. Making 16 appearances in his debut year, the loose forward’s physical and direct style shone through in a difficult year for the club.
However, Minchella was faced with hardship in 2021. After suffering a serious knee injury in Round Two against St. Helens, the Bradford-born loose forward consequently missed the rest of the season and was forced to undergo surgery.
In 2022 Minchella came back firing, clocking 27 appearances for Hull KR in all competitions, making the loose forward position his own. Elliot would then commit his long-term future to the club and sign a new deal until the end of 2026.
Reflecting on 2023, the loose forward put together his most complete season to date in Red and White, again, making 27 appearances and helping the Robins to the Challenge Cup Final and the Play-Off Semi-Finals.
Now looking towards the new year, Elliot Minchella reflected on being named Hull KR Captain for 2024: ‘I’m very proud to be Hull KR Captain. It’s a massive honour to be Captain this season and I’m ready to lead by example.’
‘I’ll be giving 110% every time I pull on the shirt. I want to do our fans, our staff and my teammates proud.
‘The last few years have been a real learning period as Vice-Captain. I’ve learned from some of the best leaders I’ve ever worked with. It’s my time now to step up and be the Captain. I’m really grateful for the opportunity.’
Hull KR Head Coach, Willie Peters was pleased to reward Minchella with the Robins’ Captaincy for 2024: ‘The best leaders lead through their actions first. They put the team first and they are consistent in who they are, both on and off the field.
‘Mini (Elliot Minchella) showed these qualities week in, week out last season. For me, he was the obvious choice to lead our team in 2024.
‘He’s an intelligent player who brings out the best in the people around him. Passion, worth ethic and a winning mentality come to mind when I think about Elliot Minchella.
‘I am really looking forward to working closely with Mini and watching him take our club to another level in 2024.'
