Hull KR Netball
Hull KR Netball was first launched in Winter 2022 with Robins’ supporter and Netball Development Officer, Olivia Park who is now Hull KR Netball’s Head Coach.
About Netball
For the Robins who’s first introduction to Netball is through the club’s new team, Netball is a ball sport played by two teams of seven players, using a rectangular court marked with specified areas.
The objective is to score as many goals as possible while preventing the opposing team from scoring. The team with the greater number of goals is the winner of the match.
Players are assigned positions denoting their roles within the team and the areas of the court in which they may move.
Players pass and catch the ball and attempt to move it into their team’s goal circle, where a goal may be scored by shooting the ball above and through a raised ring attached to a vertical post.
The opposing team attempts to prevent the shot and gain possession of the ball by using defensive movements and strategies.
Play restarts with a centre pass after each goal, with teams having alternate possession. Netball was originally created for women and girls and had unique female-focused foundations that largely avoided physical contact.
The sport has evolved to embrace inclusivity and is a sport that is open to all. The modern game is fast, dynamic, and aerial, drawing on the athleticism and skill of the players to produce an entertaining spectacle that is exciting to watch and enjoyable to play.
The Growth of Hull KR Netball
Initially, the side started with two teams that were committed to growing both their skills and the reputation of the Robins in a different arena.
Hull KR Netball’s first team started in Humberside Netball’s Division 2, with Hull KR's second team (The Robins) starting their inaugural season in Division 4, The Senior Winter League system for the city which runs from September to the following Spring.
The netball season is split into Summer and Winter calendars, Hull KR compete locally in the Humberside Summer League but push to be part of Yorkshire’s Regional Competition for the Winter League, competing in qualifiers to make the regionals.
If a side does not qualify for regionals, they play in their local division similar to the Summer Season.
Fast forward to 2024, Hull KR Netball now boast five teams that compete across multiple divisions in the Humberside Summer League.
Hull KR play in Division 1, with The Robins playing in Division 2, HKRN playing in Division 4, The Reds playing in Division 5 and The Rovers in Division 7. Additionally, Hull KR Netball now have several youth development teams up to U16s.
Hull KR Netball then had two opportunities to qualify for the 2024 Yorkshire Winter Regional League, with both Hull KR and The Robins competing in the Regional League Play-Offs earlier in Summer 2024.
In the Play-Offs, ten teams fought it out for five spots with Hull KR winning five out of ten games and placing fifth, therefore confirming their place in Yorkshire Regional 1 for Winter 2024 with the season running until Spring 2025.
