Prop Mitch Garbutt unveiled as latest signing

Hull Kingston Rovers are delighted to confirm their fourth new signing for the 2019 season with Prop Mitch Garbutt joining the club from Leeds Rhinos.

The 29 year old former Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm player has signed on a three year deal joins Jimmy Keinhorst, Weller Hauraki and Ryan Lennon who were confirmed at the end of the 2018 season.

His performances for Leeds have Super League alight, winning two Grand Finals and part of that famous treble winning side which included the Challenge Cup Final victory versus the Robins. Mitch has a no nonsense approach and became infamous for his punch on Australian test prop James Tamou in the 2016 World Club Challenge against North Queensland Cowboys, for which he later apologised.

With the final paper work completed on Tuesday, Mitch has now joined his team mates with a session already under his belt and told Hull KR TV “Everyone’s been welcoming, it was a good first hit out and there’s some characters and some really good people in the team.

The opportunity came up to leave Leeds, I had a chat with a few people and then met with Tim and he was really good. He was really straight forward with what he wanted and I think I’ll fit in really well here.

I’m looking forward to the first game, I think the Derby is really exciting. I’ve always enjoyed playing against both Hull sides. I’m really looking forward to being a part of that Derby, it’s got such a big history – and obviously I’m looking forward to the East Stand maybe cheering for me and not yelling abuse at me.”

Hull KR coach Tim Sheens is pleased with the signing and added “Mitch brings a wealth of experience to our team and joins what is now an impressive and experienced front row including Robbie Mulhern, Lee Jewitt, Mose Masoe and Nick Scruton. When a player of Mitch’s ability becomes available it’s important to move quickly to tie them down and we’re delighted we’ve been able to secure his services until 2021.”
