Milnes looking to create Elland Road history

Robins’ half-back Rowan Milnes is hoping to create his own piece of Elland Road history at this weekend’s Betfred Challenge Cup semi-final. KR face Huddersfield Giants on Saturday aiming to book a place in their first cup final since 2015.

Milnes remembers watching teammate Ryan Hall and Rovers assistant coach Danny McGuire star for Leeds Rhinos in the 2009 World Club Challenge against Manly Sea Eagles.

The 22-year-old said that he and his teammates are looking forward to Saturday: “I’ve never played at Elland Road, but I remember watching Hally and Magsy for the Rhinos against Manly,” he said.

“It’s an iconic stadium and great to be playing there in my first Challenge Cup semi-final. Everyone wants to play in big games, so we are all excited and looking forward to Saturday.

“Hopefully we can learn a lot from last season’s play-off semi and take that into this weekend.”

The Robins have been hit by injuries going into the clash with the Giants, with full-back Lachlan Coote and utility man Sam Wood added to the injury list. However, Milnes, who had to bide his time and wait for his opportunity this year, said the squad is confident regardless:

“After a tough game last week, we’ve had some good days in training and everyone is looking forward to the game, we have to focus on who is fit and ready, rather than who is injured.

“We have a strong squad and have real belief in our strength in depth, so we’re confident going into the match.”

Tony Smith’s men were beaten 26-12 by Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium back in February and Milnes is wary of their threat across the park. He added: “They started the season well, but recently probably haven’t performed as well as they would have liked recently.

“All 17 of their players are dangerous, you can’t focus on individuals. They have strike players all over the park and if we don’t prepare properly, they will do a job on us.”
